JOB DESCRIPTIONS. Write an essay about jobs in your family or circle of acquaintances using the instructions below. Write at approx. 15-20 sentences and be prepared to present your description in class. Include as many of the transition words you have learned in Ch. 23 as you can and highlight these words in the text. Submit to your instructor.
- Pre-Writing: Review the vocabulary for occupations in Ch. 22-23 in the textbook. Make a brief outline for three paragraphs:
- Write notes about the job of someone in your family or circle of acquaintances. Include information about the person’s relationship to you, job title, job location, typical tasks, positive and negative features, and that person’s opinion of the job.
- Write notes about the job of another person in your family or circle of acquaintances. Include information about the person’s relationship to you, job title, job location, typical tasks, positive and negative features, and that person’s opinion of the job.
- Write notes about the job that you would like to have in the future. Include information about job title, job location, typical tasks, positive and negative features, and the reasons this job interests you. Do you have a person who serves as a role model for you? Here are some useful phrases:

- First Draft: Write a rough draft of your essay, but focus more on content than on grammatical correctness.
- Editing: Read your draft and check the items listed below.
- Organization: Does each paragraph have a main topic? Are the sentences within each paragraph related to each other
- Cohesion and Style: Have you connected some of the sentences by using conjunctions? Have you varied your sentence structure by starting some sentences with adverbials, especially transition words?
- Spelling and Grammar
- Check the use of transition words, and make sure that you have at least 5 different examples in your essay. Remember that the subject and the verb are inverted after a transition word.
